Marketing Preferences - Behaviour by Channel
B2C (My Account)
Customers can manage their marketing preferences at any time by navigating to My Account > Security > Preferences. The current opt-in statement reads: "I would like to be the first to know about events and offers and sign up to the newsletter." The exact words may be different if you have requested a change to the statement.

Changes made here do not affect any existing orders. They apply to future orders only.
During the B2C checkout process, the value stored in My Account is used as the default. If the customer has opted in, the checkbox will be pre-selected at checkout. If they have opted out, it will be unchecked.
Whatever the customer does at checkout becomes the new stored value in their account preferences - so if they uncheck during a transaction, the account preference updates to unchecked; if they leave it checked, it remains checked in the account.

Reservations
Marketing preferences behave differently in the Reservations portal.
There is no account-level marketing preference record for a customer. Preferences cannot be inherited from the customer account record, nor do they update one. As a result, the marketing preference must be explicitly set on every individual transaction within Reservations.
POS
There is no dedicated customer account or preferences screen in the POS app.
Customer details are only accessible within the checkout flow. The Marketing Preferences checkbox exists solely within the checkout and contact-capture flow - there is no standalone account-level preferences screen.
However, when the checkbox is toggled at checkout, the preference is saved back to the customer record both locally and remotely via API.
Gift Aid
Gift Aid Consent is provided at the order level only, new features for Gift Aid managed at the Account Level will come in during a future release.
