Introduction

The Combos module in Expian lets you create combined offers that apply a discount when a customer buys two or more products, tickets, journeys, or experiences in the same booking.

Combos are designed to enhance the customer experience and simplify booking journeys by linking related products together. For example, visitors booking a Stonehenge Admission and a Tintagel Castle Ticket can be offered a combined 10% discount when purchased together. Similarly, in travel settings, a Ferry Crossing and Bus Transfer can be grouped to create a seamless, discounted travel bundle.

Properly configured, Combos help:

  • Encourage cross-selling and upselling across products.
  • Increase average order value (AOV).
  • Streamline multi-product purchases into a single, intuitive transaction.
  • Maintain control over pricing, availability, and channel restrictions.

Combos can include both in-house and third-party products, allowing flexible setup across different venues, routes, or ticket types.

Description Tab

The Description Tab defines the Combo’s core details and how it will appear across systems and channels.

Key fields include:

  • External ID: Used for API connections and integration reference.
  • Name: The internal and customer-facing name of the Combo (e.g., Twilight Tour Upsell).
  • Short Name / Label: An optional label for POS or UI use where space is limited.
  • Description: Used to describe the offer or benefit clearly, e.g., Save 10% when you book both the Twilight Tour and Palace Admission together.

This tab establishes the identity of the Combo and ensures it appears correctly in customer-facing channels and internal reporting.

Combo Rules Tab

The Combo Rules Tab defines how the Combo is triggered and what conditions must be met.

Configuration options include:

  • Number of Required Items: Determines how many products must be present in the basket to activate the Combo.
  • Example: '2' ensures both admission tickets are added before the discount applies.
  • Return Journey: Specifies whether the Combo represents a return trip.
  • Example: A ferry or train journey may use this to automatically create a return leg.
  • Combo Item Dates: Defines whether all items must be booked for the same date.
  • Example: Set to 'Same Day' for attractions, or 'Different Days' for multi-day tours.
  • Max time between: Sets the longest gap allowed between the booked dates and times of the items in the combo. If any two items are booked further apart than this, the discount won't apply.
  • Example: a four-day limit means a customer can book their second item up to four days after the first and still get the combo price.

This ensures customers only receive applicable discounts and the system applies Combo logic accurately at checkout.

Combo Products Tab

The Combo Products Tab links the actual products included in the Combo and defines any discounts or restrictions for each.

Each Combo can contain multiple Item Options (e.g., Item Option 1 and Item Option 2).

Configuration includes:

  • Promotion Products: Select the specific products included in the Combo.
  • Example: Item 1: Tower of London Admission; Item 2 – Twilight Tour Ticket.
  • Limit Date & Time: (Optional) Restrict the Combo to certain visit or travel dates.
  • Item Price Adjustment: Apply percentage or fixed-value discounts to individual items.
  • Example: 10% discount on both items when booked together.
  • Channels & Markets: Define which sales channels (POS, Web, API, Trade Partner, etc.) and markets (UK, EU, Test) the Combo applies to.

Once the combo is active, Expian applies the discount when a customer has qualifying products in the same cart and shows the adjusted pricing against each product selection, and the discount is either applied automatically, applied when the customer enters the promo code, or presented up front in a combo-initiated booking flow.

Purchase & Channel Limits Tab

The Purchase & Channel Limits Tab controls when and where the Combo can be sold.

Settings include:

  • Early Bird Options: Set the number of days in advance a customer must book for the discount to apply.
  • Purchase quantity limit: Limit how many times this combo can be applied. Choose unlimited, a fixed total (once the limit is reached, the combo stops being available), or a limit within a rolling period (e.g. 100 in any one month, counted back from today).
  • Sales Channels & Markets: Limit this product to be purchased through certain channels and markets.

This ensures Combos are only available within authorised channels and markets.

History Tab

The History Tab tracks all changes made to the Combo, including creation, edits, publishing, and republishing activity.

This ensures full auditability, allowing administrators to review configuration changes and maintain version control.

Best Practices

  • Use clear, descriptive names for Combos that make sense to both staff and customers.
  • Keep discounts consistent across items to avoid pricing confusion.
  • Test configurations in a non-live environment before publishing to ensure discounts apply correctly.
  • Restrict channels thoughtfully, for example, limit certain Combo offers to Web only if they’re part of an online campaign.
  • Review performance through analytics and adjust discount levels or availability as needed.

Summary

Combos simplify multi-product sales by allowing attractions, journeys, and experiences to be bundled into single offers.

They deliver flexibility for marketing campaigns, provide customers with greater value, and help maximise cross-selling opportunities. When configured correctly, Combos not only improve the booking experience but also enhance operational efficiency and revenue potential across all channels and markets.
